Hey All,

After 3 glorious years of using the vanilla Minecraft server the time has finally come to move away to a more custom distribution. From today onwards we will be using SpigotMC as our Minecraft server. The decision to move was made due to the terrible performance issues we've been running into with the default server. Spigot makes a lot of configurable performance improvements to the server that we'd like to take advantage of. As a bonus we also gain the ability to utilize the Bukkit mod framework in the future if we ever decide to add mods since Spigot has Bukkit baked in.

What does this mean for you? We will no longer be able to use the newest release of Minecraft right away. Spigot releases at a slightly slower pace, usually a version or two behind vanilla. For example, as of this post vanilla Minecraft is on version 1.7.9, but Spigot is using 1.7.8. The release distance is not too far so we were fine with making the jump. We hope that the performance improvements will be worth it!
